Sage 500 – End Of Life

Sage 500 – End Of Life

Sage 500 is a workhorse ERP from the Sage stable that has been around for decades. The platform, designed as a client-server system with Microsoft Visual Basic and SQL Server technologies has been around for a long time and has a dense feature set that have been used and matured for a long time. One of the frequent questions we get about this platform is how long is it going to be around and is it worth migrating away from it.

Typically, we recommend clients undertake a ERP migration journey only when there is a real need. ERP migration projects are hard to implement as they require the focus of the entire organization and are rife with challenges. It’s a journey that cannot be taken lightly as the impacts of system migration tend to last longer than the people involved and become part of organizational memory.

It’s true that there are a lot of advantages to moving to the newer, cloud first technologies but undertaking that journey should involve a large amount of preparation.

As of date, Sage continues to support Sage 500 with periodic updates and releases however, they recently announced extension of end of life support for these following versions that were due to sunset upon release of 2025 version.

  • Sage 500 2018 (Extended from 12/31/2022 to 12/31/2025)
  • Sage 500 2019 (Extended from 12/31/2024 to 12/31/2026)

Both these versions have now extended end of life support with end of year updates (1099) and fixes expected at the end of this year (2024). So, while the platform is still supported, our recommendation to our clients is to check the eco system for a better supported, more modern platform that can be supported in the long run. There are many choices. A good partner can assist you in making that decision backed by data and not a sales pitch.
